Apr 14, 05 6:28pm:
The 'sexy' uniforms of the Malaysian Airlines (MAS) stewardesses became a form of an 'aviation offence' at the Parliament sitting this afternoon with several members of parliament (MP) claiming that the presence of female cabin staff could lead to rape.

Idris Haron (BN-Tangga Batu) said the sexy uniforms of MAS stewardesses would arouse the sexual desires of male passengers. "Their sexy dress, make-up and voice will make the male passengers uncomfortable, especially during the boring flight journeys," he said during the debate for the Aviation Offences (Amendment) Bill 2005.

He said in a worse case scenario, male passengers who 'had seen sexy girls on the streets would release their frustration onto the MAS stewardesses. "If we have left our house unlocked and later it was burgled, then who should be blamed? The burglar or the owner?" he asked, adding that MAS had to differentiate between 'sexy' and 'pretty' when it came to their stewardesses' uniforms.

He pointed out that the current uniform design was one of a '...low cut at the top and a high cut at the bottom'.

Rallying behind Idris was Salahuddin Ayub (Pas- Kubang Kerian) . He said from his observation, the stewardesses were very shy and '... had to cover their cleavage with their hands' when they served food to male passengers'.

"MAS should consider altering the uniforms of the stewardesses. We are normal human beings. Sometimes it is not only that men will tackle women, but that women will also tackle men," he added.

Dr Mohd Hayati Othman (Pas-Pendang) agreed with him and said that MAS should not allow uniforms that exposed the legs.

'Debate with knowledge'
However, the male MPs' remarks on the uniforms of MAS stewardesses irked female MPs from both sides of the House.

Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam) said the male MPs should not be talking like ' ... how people talk in the pasar (market) and coffee shops'. "We have to debate based on knowledge. Tangga Batu you are so highly educated and had studied abroad. On this aspect, can you be more open? How can you say that when you see a sexy woman, you would think of releasing your frustration?" she thundered. She stressed that whatever clothes a woman wore, it should not be an excuse for raping her.

Tan Lian Hoe (BN-Bukit Gantang) also expressed her dissatisfaction over the atiitude of the male MPs. "I don't feel comfortable when you say that women have to be blamed because they are pretty and sexy. If you have a strong belief, you should not be so easily aroused," she said. However she concurred that “When the male passengers board a plane, all they tend to look at are the stewardesses' breasts. This shows that they do not have strong values!”

Dr Rozaidah Talib (BN-Ampang) said the more significant issue that needed to be addressed was the serving of alcohol on MAS flights and not the dress of their air-hostesses. "The issue of alcohol should be more important. If you have had alcohol, than even clothes which are not tight would be seen as very tight," she said.

The only male MP who supported the female MPs was Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan). He said uniforms should not be an issue in debating the security of the country's aviation system. "They were some women who wore denim pants but have also been raped. So the issue in this debate should be how to enhance the service of MAS," he said. "I normally don't agree with Bukit Mertajam. But in this matter, I think I agree with her," he added cheekily.

Just wtf is WRONG with our elected members of parliament that TRIVIAL matters like this gets debated instead of more pressing issues such as the ringgit peg, state of broadband penetration in suburban areas, the succes/failure of teaching Maths & Science in English, etc. etc.

And those are just off the top of my head!!!!

Are our MPs only good for discussing trivial matters and sleeping during parliamentary sessions??
